Annual General Meeting
It was sad to see so few people attending the AGM and the Annual Parish
Meeting. James Macdonald was elected
Chairman for the forthcoming year and Peter Wombwell Vice-Chairman. The Chairman would like to thank everyone in
the village who has helped the Parish Council during the past year; in
particular David and Monica Lilley for editing Icene, Gordon Woolhouse and his
Committee for taking care of the Village Hall, Andrew Shepperd for maintaining
the website and to Charles Frankau and Ron Coulson for carrying out numerous
jobs on the Council’s behalf.
Vacancy on Parish Council Owing to the resignation of one of our
new Councillors, we now have a Casual Vacancy.
This is being advertised on the Notice Board as well as in Icene. If anyone feels they could serve their
community by becoming a Parish Councillor, please let me know as soon as
possible. The work is not onerous – one
meeting a month and a little reading matter – and you could help make a
difference in our village.
Congratulations to Robin Driver on being elected Chairman of Cambridgeshire
County Council. He has served as a
Parish Councillor in Ickleton for 37 years and has been a District Councillor
for 22 years. He has served on the
County Council between 1989 and 93, and was elected again in 1997 and
re-elected in 2001.
Mobile Police Station Wednesday 11th June
from 10.00am to 2.00pm outside the Village Hall. While
the site of the Sawston Police Station is being redeveloped, our Community Beat
Officer, PC Iain Perry has arranged for a mobile Police Station to visit us
from time to time. Please use this
opportunity to talk to him about any concerns you may have.
Litter on Recreation Field Please use the bins provided and do not
leave your drink cans etc. under the seats.
Bonfires Please
consider your neighbours when lighting a bonfire; think about which way the
wind is blowing and look to see if they have just put out a line of washing!
Wellcome Trust
Archaeological excavations have taken place on the wetlands site (west
of the river Cam, just beyond the level crossing at Mill Lane) and work on
landscape restructuring will begin shortly.
Byeway 7, Grassy Lane, will be diverted while this work takes
place. Notices will indicate its
temporary route and it will be reinstated as soon as the work is finished. Work has also started on the construction of
a new Campus entrance.
Recycling Collection will be on Wednesdays 11th and 25th
June. Jackie Casement
May we remind
readers that, like the real press, we do not publish anonymous letters.
We may consider withholding
a name if requested but only if the editors and Parish Council are aware of the
idenity of the sender.
If you wish to use this service,.
We have an opportunity to stage live professional
dance, theatre, music and cabaret at very affordable prices under the auspices
of ‘Art in Cambs on Tour’. We need a group of friends prepared to help to
organise events and to offer overnight accommodation if required for the
artists. For further details, please

From the Vicar
June is always a
month of celebration in our group of three churches. Not only do several of the
great festivals of the Christian year fall in June, including Pentecost, but we
also keep two out of our four Patronal Festivals, on the feasts of St John the
Baptist and St Peter the Apostle. This year we’re planning something new to
mark the feast of St John the Baptist. As usual we shall be opening up St
John’s Church Duxford, but this time our service will be in the evening and we
shall be specially inviting all those who are godparents, or who might be
thinking about becoming godparents in future. To become a godparent at the
baptism of a child is a wonderful privilege and also an important
responsibility. In baptism we promise to set our godchildren an example of
Christian belonging and believing and also to pray for them. Sometimes these
things get forgotten as the years slip by but if you’re able to come along to
the service, on Sunday 22nd June, there’ll be an opportunity to pray
for your godchild or children and light a candle for them.
Also coming up this month is
our annual School Church Day. The theme this year is ‘All God’s Creatures’ and
we shall be finding out more about birds and animals in the Bible and thinking
about ourselves as part of God’s creation. As usual it will be a full and
hopefully exciting day with plenty of music, artwork, interesting visitors and
challenging activities. Parents, expect your children to come home with new
ideas about how we human beings can live responsibly in God’s beautiful but
fragile world. On the subject of younger people, you may have seen posters here
and there advertising our new youth network, known as SpiritLevel. SpiritLevel
is for teens, roughly 12 – 16 years and we have a regular programme of events.
For instance, we may visit another church where there is a special youth event
going on. Or we may meet for discussion of some of the important issues
affecting us and our society. Or we may go out for a social evening, maybe
bowling or skating or for pizza. We welcome new members and you don’t have to
be a Christian, so if you want to know more, do call or email and I’ll tell you
all about it.
With God’s blessing

WHERE ARE
YOU @?
Last year we ran a discussion group with the title
‘Where are you@?’ A number of
interested people came along to the sessions and last November four of them
were also confirmed. This year we aim
to run the groups again. There will be
three sessions entitled: ‘Where are you @ with God? ‘ Where are you @ with the
Bible?’ and ‘Where are you @ with the
Church?’. For those wishing to consider baptism/confirmation this could be a
good starting point, but anyone who would like to come along and share in the
discussion (and the wine!) on a strictly no-strings-attached basis, will be
equally welcome. Please contact Jane
Charman as soon as possible if you are interested so that we can fix up dates.
As we are getting
nearer to the big day here is a list of this year’s stall. Many thanks to

The 4th Parkinson’s Spring Bazaar came
round very quickly and the day was a great success with a total of £2048.32
raised.
I must stress none of this could possibly have taken place without the dedicated help from the many helpers to whom I would like to say a very big thank you and well done!
There are two unclaimed prizes from the draw in the name of Pamela Laing - can anyone help?

My thanks to Jilly and Ron Maynard for their account,
in the last Bulletin, of events whilst they were away on holiday. This was the most serious burglary in the village
for many years. The fact that one
burglary took place during the afternoon, in broad daylight, shows that we must
be on our guard at all times and not just during hours of darkness.
Recently in France I picked up a leaflet at Nice
Airport giving security advice. It was in five languages and I quote from the
English translation.
1. Avoid of
carrying your bag across your shoulder and avoid of walking too close to the
pavement. In a crowd beware of
pickpockets.
2. Do not
carry big amount of money, traveller’s cheques or jewellery. Leave them in the hotel
safe.
3. When you
use your credit card, make sure of hiding from other people while keying your
pin
code. Be careful when you take out your
money at a cash dispenser. Do not leave
or
throw
away your receipt.
4. Do not
leave your mobile phone or bag available to anybody.
5. Do not
leave your things unattended.
The translation may not be very good but the advice
is good in any language so take care even when you are abroad. Tony Court
The Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 14th
May was well attended and members of the society had plenty of ideas for future
activities. Our chairman, Sheila Birch,
reported on the role of the society and its activities, the principal one being
the care, collection and cataloguing of
all the archive material the society possesses. We are glad to welcome a new committee member, Rachel Radford. We were then most amusingly entertained by
Russell Green with his stories of growing up in Saffron Walden.
Outing to Bressingham Gardens and Steam Museum, Saturday
14th June
A day out for all the family. Glorious
gardens to wander round and the Blooms of Bressingham Garden Centre. Enjoy a steam train ride through the gardens
and the working Victorian steam carousel.
Also the Dad’s Army Collection, including Walmington-on-Sea High Street!
Car sharing can be arranged. The
journey should be about one and a quarter hours, leaving Ickleton at 10.30
a.m. You can either bring a picnic
lunch or eat at one of the restaurants.
The entry costs is £7.50 (£6.50 for senior citizens and £5.00 for
children). Please let Jos Flitton know
if you would like to join us.
Have you a few hours a week to spare? Do you like meeting people?

THE
CHESTERFORDS, ICKLETON AND HINXTON W.I.
At the May meeting the resolutions were discussed and
all three were voted on unanimously.
They were - children’s diets, exercise and health, care of the elderly,
and the promotion of modern apprenticeship schemes to provide skilled workers
for the future.
Afterwards to provide a lighter note, several members
spoke of their favourite things, which was much enjoyed. At the next meeting,
members will learn about the work carried out by the Doctors on the Mercy
Ships. Cynthia Rule
DUXFORD C
OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL P.T.A. FETE SUNDAY 8TH JUNE
It’s that time of year again when the P.T.A. are
frantically trying to arrange the annual fete.
The theme for the fete will be ‘HARRY POTTER’. The
fete will open with the fancy dress parade and competition (so we expect to see
lots of wizards and witches).
There will be all the usual stalls – BBQ, Cake Stall,
Coconut Shy, Balloon Race etc.
Also a few new stalls this year, which will include –
Crockery Smash, Beer Tent, Nearly New Stall and Car Boot Sale. If anybody has
any items that could be used for any of the stalls i.e. crockery smash, nearly
new, books or bric-a-brac (collection of bulky items possible) or if you have
time to spare on the day and could help set up, pack away or even run a stall
then please telephone Ann Wallis or Sam.
The Car Boot Sale will cost £5 per pitch - if you
would like further information then please phone Karen or Tracey.
Extra chairs were brought in to accommodate over 50
members who attended the meeting on
May 7th. Our guest speaker for the evening
was Mr. David Bond (connected with Scotsdales) who spoke and demonstrated the
art of pruning fruit trees and shrubs.
Much interest was shown and many questions asked. He proved a very knowledgeable speaker and
his talk was much enjoyed. The new
programmes are now available presenting a very interesting year of events to
look forward to. On June 26th
at 6 p.m. we will be visiting the gardens of The Crossing House and
Docwra Manor Gardens in Shepreth.
The Speaker for June 4th will be Mr.
Skipper and his subject is Penstemons, now a very popular plant, and there will
be plants for sale. Cynthia

Some of us who grew up together in Ickleton in the 40’s
and 50’s will be attending the village fete on the 19th July. If you were part of that age group (Molly
Clements, Tony Burton, Bob Bolton, Brenda and Ivan Carder, Betty Webb, Graham
Morris, Jack Bristow, Bill Brand, Tony Caswell, Harold Bridgeman, Roger
Jarrold, Lewis Bridgeman, Godfrey Elms etc. etc. (sound familiar?) come and
meet us again. See how many you can
recognise! Meet in the Village Hall at 11.00 a.m. See you there. Mick Bristow.
On Father’s Day, Sunday 15th June, the
Imperial War Museum, Duxford, will be holding a special Spitfire Day as part of
its celebrations for the Centenary of Flight and offering a unique opportunity
for those seeking a Father’s Day gift with a difference.
There will be a host of Spitfires on display as well
as fascinating short talks by veteran and current display pilots. Displayed alongside the Spitfires will be
various marques of another classic British design - the Aston Martin Lagonda.
The epitome of class,
sophistication and sheer style, these famous prestige cars will add
glamour to the day. The highlight of the day will be a ‘Spitfire Scramble’
re-enactment when some of these much-loved vintage aircraft take to the skies.
A beautifully presented gift pack, exclusive to Duxford, is available for those
seeking an innovative and unusual Father’s Day gift. The pack will contain admission ticket(s), information on the
day, a Father’s Day card with a Spitfire design (blank for own message),
information on the classic Spitfire and its wartime role and Duxford’s history
as a famous fighter station during the Battle of Britain. There is also the opportunity to purchase an
additional gift – a flight in a 1930s Dragon Rapide at a discounted rate. Prices for the pack start at just £10.00
including one adult admission to the Museum.
Gates open 10.00 a.m. For further information about
